For treating retinal diseases the most commonly used laser is the green LASER/ retina laser (532nm, double frequency Nd:YAG Laser) The word LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The first LASER was built in 1960 by Theodore H Maiman.

If you have a retinal tear, you may need treatment to prevent a retinal detachment — a medical emergency where the retina is pulled away from its normal position.

When a laser beam is focused on the retina, it causes a burn. As the burned tissue heals, it becomes a scar. This is the main goal of most laser treatments for retinal diseases. It treats light spots and hypopigmentation using bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% (also know as Latisse and Lumigan) in combination with the Fraxel laser and topical retin-A. Bimatoprost increases pigment production, while the Fraxel and retin-A allow the bimatoprost to better penetrate the skin. These include inadvertent laser to the macula, choroidal effusions (particularly in cases where large amounts of laser are used), angle closure glaucoma, epiretinal membrane formation, anterior segment laser burns, hemorrhage (of the retina, vitreous ,or choroid), choroidal neovascular membrane formation, and the formation of new retinal breaks.

In a new study, researchers say they have a better idea of how skin rejuvenates itself after laser treatments — something they hope could lead to improved therapies.

The procedure is usually painless; however some patients may appreciate some discomfort/pain after the laser procedure, which responds well to non-steroidal analgesic (pain killing) agents. It is a very high-energy bright light that, when directed and focussed on to a retina, is absorbed by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). [retinadoctor.com.au] No retinal complications were observed with the various forms of NRT used, but six patients in two studies with micropulse laser experienced pigmentary changes in the retinal pigment epithelium attributed to excessive laser settings. A photofacial procedure uses a computer-controlled tube to emit a non-laser, high-intensity, multi-wavelength light beam that can penetrate all layers of the skin. The beam is absorbed by areas of excess pigment in the epidermis as well as excess hemoglobin that accumulates in dilated blood vessels or broken capillaries. I find that subthreshold laser with EpM is effective following anti-VEGF therapy in patients who have a dry retina to help keep it dry and reduce the need for additional long-term injection therapy. Subthreshold laser is useful as adjunctive treatment in more challenging or recalcitrant eyes that have reached their response threshold with anti-VEGF and/or steroid shots.
